You might find yourself working in diverse roles such as:

  • Appraiser: Determining the value of a property, usually for a sale, mortgage, or tax purposes, based on its features, condition, and market data.

The most crucial step for many real estate careers is obtaining the proper licensing. For a real estate agent, this involves completing specific state-mandated courses and passing a licensing exam. Once you have your license, you’ll need to join a brokerage to operate legally.

Practical experience is also key. Shadowing an experienced agent, working as an administrative assistant at a brokerage, or taking on a sales role in another industry can help build relevant skills.
