What advice would you give students who have an interest in consulting?

Reach out to anyone you might know for informational interviews. As long as there is one degree of separation, they will likely respond. Get a good understanding of what their day-to-day is, because there are tons of different types of consultants.

What WFU career resources did you utilize that were most helpful to you?

Resume review, Handshake, mock interviews

What courses, activities or experiences gave you an edge in the job search process?

I studied “Case In Point” on my own before making the switch to consulting. I cannot stress this enough: reach out to people at the companies. Almost all have a referral program.

What specific advice would you give regarding effective networking?

The more people you connect with the better. It is a numbers game through and through. The more people you contact the better your chances are.

What advice would you give to students regarding effective interviewing?

Be clear and friendly. Find a point of connection during the ‘small talk’ portion and use that in your follow-up. Often companies/interviewers will hire people that they wouldn’t mind being trapped in an airport with for three hours (“The Airport Test.)”

Are there any books, magazines, websites, etc. that you would recommend to students who are interested in consulting?
