What advice would you give students who have an interest in consulting?
Consultants are known as problem solvers, and part of helping a client solve a problem is understanding exactly what they are looking for or what barriers they are facing. Start early to develop effective questioning skills.
What WFU career resources did you utilize that were most helpful to you?
Lunch and learns, consulting panels to hear from industry professionals, meetings with career coaches
What courses, activities or experiences gave you an edge in the job search process?
Through the lunch and learns, I learned how to ask informed questions and was prepared. Developing soft skills prior to starting my role also helped me stand out
What specific advice would you give regarding effective networking?
Know about the individual you are networking with. It’s good to know what they do/where they work and ask questions specific to them, rather than general questions.
What specific advice would you give to students regarding effective interviewing?
Be prepared, know the ins and outs of the company you are interviewing for and come with questions for the people who will be interviewing you.
Are there any books, magazines, websites, etc. that you would recommend to students who are interested in consulting?
Morning Brew, reading the news, staying up to date on current events is huge when networking and conversing with industry professionals. Take advantage of the resources available to you and work on developing soft skills while you are still in school!
