What advice would you give students who have an interest in finance?

Network, network, network.

What WFU career resources did you utilize that were most helpful to you?

Use the alumni network resources to connect with folks in your desired finance specialization.  Most alumni are happy to speak to students.

What courses, activities or experiences gave you an edge in the job search process?

For investment banking roles, modeling certifications and a solid background in accounting are important differentiators.

What specific advice would you give regarding effective networking?

Do your research beforehand and try to connect on a personal level with alumni. Do not send a standardized email. Make sure you have specific questions for them other than “do you have any jobs.”

What specific advice would you give to students regarding effective interviewing?

Finance interviews, especially investment banking and private equity, are very rigorous and consist of both qualitative and quantitative questions. Guides for typical interview questions are available online and generally these reflect the same types of questions you will receive.  Remember that you’re competing against other very highly qualified candidates so one error could tank your interview.

Are there any books, magazines, websites, etc. that you would recommend to students who are interested in finance?

Students should be reading the Wall Street Journal daily as well as The Economist, Financial Times, and Harvard Business Review. Some peer discussion board sites such as Wall Street Oasis and Mergers & Inquisitions are helpful as well.
